The importance of last panels

A brief but major tip: I can't stress how much influence the last panel of each comic book page has over upholding the interest level of the reader. The last panel in each comic page can either excite and push the reader to turn--or bore the reader from turning to the next page. Much like how the opening sentence in a book needs to be captivating, the last panel has to be just the same (most of the time, anyway). While it's not entirely necessary as a rule to drawing and writing comic books, it certainly has the potential to really push the entertainment level--which is (hopefully) what you want. Therefore unofficially making it necessary. It doesn't matter if the panel shows big or small anticipation--as long as it's active and not passive. It's a tried and true method of storytelling in the comics medium; it never gets old.

I've listed two types of anticipation, each having their own group of examples. There might be more subcategories, but here are some basic ones:

Anticipation (big)

Etc.

It's summer, and I'll be officially starting my biggest project yet with these two kids. Don't worry, Vera and Ross won't be shoved aside! They're going to also be finally drawn in sequential format as well; I'm aiming for a one-shot volume with them. :D

I'll be exposing my power level over 9000 this summer, so thanks so much for all of your support and believing in me! It was hard building some recognition and credit growing up (especially to your own family) and it still is, but I think I've at least finally proved to myself that I can draw comics professionally for once. It's funny that ever since 4th grade, I used to wonder at the end of every year if I were good enough yet. Now that I'm here, I'm so excited.

For all you graduates, I wish you luck on your future endeavors as well! Life isn't so bad if you work hard and smart.

Sorry. I kept forgetting to put more WIPs up since I was struggling with this. I'd say it was an experimental failure... it's like I forgot how to color or something. even though I kind of gave up, it's still pretty cute.

HAHAH I hate this so much, smh. Background isn't even mine, I painted over a pre-existing one because I'm running out of time. I'm surprised that the line I drew to mark the sidewalk was pretty accurate, though.

More people are starting to understand that this is a stock expression that is unfortunately way over-used in mainstream animation, and that it's not just Dreamworks studios that does these sassy looking faces for marketing purposes. (I am exempting Buzz from this since he is supposed to be a consumer product in the movie.) I am also getting pretty tired of listening to people who can't really tell the difference between these two studios other than from this PIXAR VS DREAMWORKS meme image.

Anyways, as John K. would dub them, they are your smartass 'Tude expressions. The kind of lazy stock expression that doesn't need any sort of characterization, and can consequently be slapped onto any ol' character's face. I'm glad he specifically made sure to not make this face in any of his Ren and Stimpy in-betweens, hahahaha.

I guess as you may have known, I've been growing onto John K's blog. XD Don't know why, but I never really got into it the first time I stumbled onto it. It may have been the highly opinionated posts, like rarararh CG cartoons suck rarararah what happened to all the colorful vintage ones. But then I found out that there are a lot of educational posts in there as well--which is rare, esp. coming from a professional who's worked in the animation industry! *SHAMESHAMESHAME* Anyways, his girls are super cute (even if a little too sexy for me at times).

I also need to stop being lazy and just use a scanner. My camera isn't doing me any good.

Hnnnnnng can't get enough of it--life drawing is really fun and I plan on hiring models for sessions with friends sometime. I contacted one of them named John at AIB and the fee is not that expensive at all if split up. But if you prefer to pay it yourself, that's still affordable too.

Some practicework--John K.'s characters are really curvy so I thought it'd be perfect to work with. It took way too long, and some curves were harder to do than expected... I got so tired of inking it that I skipped a few things and the highlight on the hair. XD =( I'll have to practice more.

I'm dedicating this post to an artist who doesn't get much-deserved attention for his gallery. Also because he is quickly becoming one of my favorite artists of all time--haha! Distinct action-vintage characters with a mysterious allure to each of their personalities, reminiscent to the golden age of cinema classic Casablanca--that's what I love and it's what he draws. I've been thinking about my comic project lots and I figure it's time to store all the inspirations that lead up to it. It's a lot to write down and present visually, so a tumblr would have been great for it (as it easily supports video, audio, photos and text all in one.)

It's fairly new and not much is in it yet, but please check it every now and then! Perhaps these resources will inspire you as well. Maybe it will give you a better feel of my aesthetics/style preference? Or at least an idealized combination of styles. The issue of objectivity and subjectivity is constantly butting with the concept of documentary photography.
